Manifest and Unmanifest (Series)

2019-Ongoing

Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam states that matter originates in an unmanifest form (Avyapt), one that cannot be known or observed. From this, ‘Manifest’ state (Vyapt)of matter is produced which can be observed.

The Unmanifest is the unchangeable reality. Here, for me the artist, this comprises of paper, colours, oil, water, brushes etc. They are the universe. They are the Brahma, the absolute, formless from which will manifestation arise.

Manifest, is what I as an artist observe in the unchangeable, based on my thoughts, desires and experience.

What I draw out, from the unmanifest is my personal reflection. The mirror is unchangeable and invisible, what we see does not exist in it but it is what is reflected.

These works are creations of my sub-conscious, my memories some vivid and some lost over time. When the colour touches the surface, I do not know what will appear. As it moves, trying to find its reality I guide it along with my perception of what it could be. The result is an amalgamation of the two.

This for me is meditation wherein I let go of my need to achieve a pre-conceived result and enjoy the process of accepting the reality.
